Designer History

Ralph Lifschitz was born in The Bronx, New York on October 14. 1939. At age 16, Ralph's brother Jerry changed their last name from Lifshitz to Lauren and today, Ralph Lauren is one of the most iconic names in fashion worldwide.

He went to the Baruch College for two years where he studied business and later served in the United States Army. Unlike most fashion designers, Lauren never studied fashion, instead he worked as a salesman at Brooks Brothers after his army discharge and then at Beau Brummell Neckwear where he created Polo, a very successful necktie business. In 1968, he branched out alone and launched a full Polo menswear line, followed by women’s wear in 1971.

Today, RL's many collections are renowned for their quintessentially all - American style of casual chic. Polo Ralph Lauren is a publicly traded company, on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol RL. Lauren's small, specialized necktie business has become a billion-dollar lifestyle brand.
